Phoenix welcomes the UK Government’s ‘Energy White Paper’ on the future energy strategy, published today 23rd May 2007, which highlights the importance of a viable ‘energy mix’, energy conservation and the need to reduce carbon emissions.
Peter Dixon, Chief Executive of Phoenix Natural Gas, commented on the new strategy:
“Northern Ireland can be proud that it is already leading the way in the challenge to combat climate change through reducing its carbon footprint – in particular through the conversion of 100,000 households in the Greater Belfast area to natural gas from more polluting fuels. Energy efficiency measures combined with the lowest carbon fossil fuel are reducing household carbon emissions by more than 40% compared to a typical heating oil installation.”
Mr Dixon concluded:
“Consistent with this Strategy Paper published today, we are looking forward to working with local politicians to help accelerate the growth of the natural gas industry across Northern Ireland in partnership with the development of renewable technology over the next five to ten years and capitalise on the progress that has already been made.“
